Wilmington, Growing Tennis Powerhouse
The hard-working volunteers of the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association (GTWA) are celebrating the announcement of more courts planned for New Hanover County. A parks bond referendum, allowing the county to buy land and build new parks and athletic fields as well as improve existing ones, was passed with a unanimous verdict from all 46 of the county’s precincts.
Yona and Joan Bar-Zeev, spearheaded the GWTA’s efforts urging area residents to get out and vote YES to pass the parks bond. “We are very excited! This will provide opportunities for more people to play tennis, kids & adults alike.”
So what does the money go towards? Proceeds from the parks bond issue will provide about $13.6 million for Wilmington projects and $13.8 for county projects, as well as $7.5 million for joint projects, including $6 million for a baseball and softball complex and $1.5 million for a tennis center.
And specifically… In addition to many new parks and improvements to existing parks, this Bond issue will provide additions and improvements to the public tennis facilities in New Hanover County including a large public tennis center:
