Helen Leonard named USTA North Carolina Tennis Star

Congratulations to Helen Leonard, our USTA North Carolina Tennis Star for the month of June!

For the last five years, Helen Leonard (right) has volunteered with the Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (ASAP) in Charlotte, specifically working with their wheelchair tennis program. Helen leads the weekly on court activities, coordinating with other volunteers and ASAP staff to provide the best experience for their participants.

Helen, her husband Bill, and their two daughters, Megan and Molly, also plan, organize, and direct the annual Strokes for Spokes Tennis Tournament. Last year this fundraising event earned over $12,000 for ASAP programing.

Helen and her family discovered ASAP through Bill’s position with Carolina’s Healthcare System. Upon discovering this program, Helen was immediately hooked. She was amazed that ASAP tennis participants spanned all levels of play, and she was impressed by the commitment, fellowship, and camaraderie all the participants possessed.

“Their positive, can-do attitudes and support of each other are qualities that all tennis players should strive for,” said Helen.

“Being involved with ASAP and these incredible athletes has made me a better person. It has given me a new perspective, on and off the court. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of the ASAP tennis program and especially to have made lasting friendships through the sport of tennis.”
