Tar Heels win second straight Tennis On Campus title

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels are celebrating another club tennis title. UNC defeated North Carolina State 25-20 in the finals to claim the 2015 USTA North Carolina Tennis On Campus Championship, making it two straight years on top for the Tar Heels.

UNC Greensboro was the site of this year’s tournament, with matches taking place from Oct. 23-25. More than 20 teams competed, breaking the all-time high for the North Carolina tournament.

The Tar Heels were anchored by solid play across the lineup. Nelson Hughes and Seth Pinosky won all four of their matches 6-1. Captain Sarah French and Caroline Jones cruised through women’s doubles, and Ryan Wydra only lost five games in three matches at men’s singles.

NC State put up a strong fight to the end, though. The Wolfpack won two of the five matches against the Tar Heels in the championship. There were tight matches throughout the tournament, which speaks to the level of play so many schools in North Carolina bring to the table.

“We’re always impressed by the level of competition at these tournaments, said Caroline Downs, USTA North Carolina Director of Team Tennis & Growth Leagues. “Our Tennis On Campus State Championships continue to grow every year. Schools are really responding and developing strong programs.”

The Tar Heels automatically earn a spot in the 2016 USTA Tennis On Campus Southern Championship, which will start on Feb. 26 at Auburn University’s Yarbrough Tennis Center.
